Ellerslie Location Notice - Balance Psychological Services

Please note that on Tuesdays from 1:00–3:00 PM, our Ellerslie (South Edmonton) location hosts a Mom & Baby group within the office. Therapy sessions with other clients will continue as scheduled during this time; however, you may occasionally hear voices, babies, or general activity in the common areas while the group is taking place.

We appreciate your understanding and will continue to do our best to maintain a comfortable and private environment for all sessions.

As a therapist, my three most important values are depth, practicality, and efficiency. While managing the challenges that bring you in, we’ll work towards deep healing and growth. I want to make sure that you’re getting something out of our sessions. I’ll regularly check in on progress and invite you to collaborate on how to best use our time. Perhaps most importantly, I’m trying to work myself out of a job. I’m not interested in keeping you in therapy longer than is helpful. If what we’re doing isn’t working, we’ll make any necessary adjustments together.

My name is Sam and I am completing the MEd Program in Counselling Psychology through the University of Lethbridge. I’m working as a mental health therapist while awaiting approval to become a registered provisional psychologist. I’ve received excellent training in counselling theory, advanced interventions, and professional ethics. I’ve spent the last academic year counselling post-secondary students at MacEwan University. While completing my higher education, I’ve answered crisis lines, served vulnerable populations, volunteered at a hospice, and worked in a number of research and leadership positions.

I think treatment approaches in counseling are highly individualized. When thinking of how best to support a client, I draw from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Mindfulness, Internal Family Systems (IFS), and Existential-Humanistic approaches.

I’m also deeply relational. The quality of the therapeutic relationship is one of the most important factors that predicts positive outcomes. Whether you want a professional approach, some back and forth humour, or simply someone to hold space, I meet every client where they are at. Feel free to book a 15 minute phone call to see if we would be a good fit.

Outside of work, I enjoy meditating, running, and spending time with loved ones.

I am a Registered Psychologist who focuses on the treatment of trauma and complex loss. I find that so much of my practice is based on the idea of the shattered vase (Dr. Stephen Joseph). Trauma and loss have a way of making us feel as though we have been broken, perhaps into thousands of little pieces, but I want my clients to recognize that even with this, they now have a choice. They can throw those pieces away and see themselves as missing parts, they can attempt to recreate the vase knowing it will never be what it once was, or, they can use these pieces to create a mosaic: something different than what we anticipated but beautiful none the less.

I have a bachelor of Science majoring in Biological Sciences (why yes I am a bio nerd, thank you so much) and a Master of Counselling Degree through City University of Seattle. As mentioned, my area of practice focuses on trauma and complex grief. The vast majority of my clients are either first responders or perinatal individuals (pregnant and/or postpartum) however, I am happy to consult to see if I could be a fit for your needs. I am a behaviour based therapist (which often means I am more directive in session) who is heavily influenced by attachment theory and existential perspectives. My clients will often get some mixture of Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, the Grief Recovery Method, Accelerated Resolution Therapy, and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) with flavors of attachment based, existential, and narrative processing.

Simply put, my personal philosophy is to provide a space where I sit with, support, and at times, guide other individuals to rediscover their most balanced selves. I specifically choose the word balanced because I understand that we cannot strive for things to be successful, or even happy, all of the time. Unfortunately, life will always present challenges but I work to help my clients find the strength to meet those challenges when they arrive, to cope and find recovery when those challenges knock us down, and to soak up the moments and sense of contentment that exist when the challenges are not present (or at least are less present).

My approach to counselling draws on a variety of modalities to tailor the therapy experience to each client’s needs.

I practice through an attachment lens, examining the relationships that have shaped us throughout our lives. I use a trauma-informed approach, alongside methods such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT), and mindfulness practices. I’m an advocate for the importance of the mind-body connection and using somatic-based practices that attune to this in session.

I work with adolescents 12+, individual adults, couples, and seniors.

Some of my areas of specialization include caregiving/aging, grief and loss, relationships, neurodiversity, health/medical-related issues, and working with individuals with disabilities.

Outside of my therapy work, I enjoy crafting, DIY home projects, and film photography. I’m also an avid thrifter and delight in a cool second-hand find!

Hi! I’m Meagan (she/they), a Registered Provisional Psychologist.

I’m passionate about creating a space where you feel seen, heard, and supported as you navigate life’s challenges. I work with individuals exploring identity, managing socioeconomic stress, and affirming Queer identities.

My approach is collaborative and client-centred, emphasizing your expertise in yourself. In short, my goal is to be YOUR therapist - partnering with you to build on your strengths, personal stories, and experiences. I draw from strength-based, narrative, and solution-focused techniques to develop strategies that align with your goals.

I’m committed to culturally responsive and inclusive practice. I recognize how systemic inequities, such as colonialism, racism, and heterosexism, impact mental health. As a white settler on Treaty 6 territory, I continually reflect on my privilege and aim to challenge harmful dominant narratives.

My practice is informed by feminist, decolonial, and Queer frameworks, and I welcome feedback as I continue learning and growing.

Outside of therapy, you’ll likely find me curled up with a good book, my cats, and a giant mug of coffee. My favourite ways to ground myself are dancing it out (thank you Grey’s Anatomy), listening to music, and wandering through nature. I also enjoy turning everyday tasks into little grounding rituals - washing my face, unloading the dishwasher, playing with my cats, or reading before bed are some examples!

If this feels like a good fit, please don’t hesitate to reach out!

Hi there! I’m Katelyn, a Registered Provisional Psychologist in Alberta with a Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology from City University of Seattle. My capstone research focused on understanding how experiences of grief are impacted by ambiguous loss when a loved one goes missing. This work sparked my passion in supporting individuals who are experiencing grief and loss and has provided me with a unique understanding of how to support those who feel that their grief has been misunderstood, minimized, or dismissed.

My approach to sessions is based on collaboration, connection, and authenticity. I believe that each of us has the capacity for healing and that this journey looks different for everyone. My goal within each session is to create a space that feels safe enough for you to show up as your true self, feeling seen, heard and welcomed. I truly believe that you are the expert in your own life and that my role is to walk beside you as you learn to nurture your inherent strengths, healing, learning, and growth. To support this, I draw on several different approaches based on the unique needs of you as a client, primarily Internal Family Systems (IFS), Attachment Theory, and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). Additionally, I have completed basic training in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) for the treatment of trauma.

My work focuses on supporting clients aged 16 and older as they navigate grief and loss, trauma, anxiety, depression, perfectionism, emotional regulation, and issues related to 2SLGBTQ+ and gender identity. I am also extremely passionate about supporting individuals and partners who have experienced pregnancy loss, birth trauma, fertility struggles, health complications such as endometriosis, and perinatal mood and anxiety disorders. To support this area of my practice, I have pursued additional training in perinatal mental health through Canadian Perinatal Mental Health Trainings (CPMHT).

I genuinely believe that there is a place in the counselling space for everyone, so thank you for taking the first step in showing up for yourself by being here!

My work as a therapist is grounded in the belief that healing happens through connection, kindness, and the courage to truly meet ourselves where we are. My intention is to create a space where you feel safe to bring your whole self—where your voice is heard, your story is respected, and your strengths are recognized. I see you as the expert of your own life, and my role is to walk alongside you as you navigate healing, growth, and self-discovery in ways that feel meaningful to you.

This journey may involve raising awareness of unconscious patterns, exploring how defences and motivations shape your relationships, meeting undiscovered or emerging parts of yourself, processing traumatic events, or practicing self-compassion. Together, we may examine the ways past experiences influence your present, notice how the nervous system holds stress, or build tools for regulation and resilience. Wherever our work leads, my approach is collaborative, gentle, and paced by your readiness.

I draw on a range of therapeutic modalities to support the unique needs of each person I meet, including Psychodynamic Therapy, Internal Family Systems (Parts Work), Attachment-Focused Therapy, EMDR, Hakomi, Narrative Therapy, Somatic Experiencing, ACT, and mindfulness-based approaches. Above all, I practice from a trauma-informed lens, with a deep respect for consent and safety. I believe in checking in, asking permission, and offering psychoeducation along the way so you feel empowered and informed in every step of the process.

I work with individuals ages 13 and up. At the heart of my practice are issues related to attachment wounds, trauma, grief and loss, intimate partner violence, anxiety, depression, emotional connection, and self-esteem. I also enjoy supporting clients navigating the unique challenges and gifts of neurodiversity, high-functioning or high-pressure lifestyles, and experiences specific to women and members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. My years as a tenured educator bring additional insight and capacity to meet the needs of students and teachers who may be balancing the demands of academic, relational, and personal growth.

Therapy, to me, is not only about addressing pain but also about rediscovering joy, building meaningful connections, and cultivating a kinder relationship with oneself. I believe healing unfolds when we can bring tenderness to our stories, curiosity to our patterns, and courage to our growth.

Outside the therapy room, I find grounding and inspiration in the simple pleasures of everyday life. I love spending time outdoors—whether it’s walking along tree-lined trails, breathing in mountain air, or simply sitting in the quiet of nature. A good cup of coffee, moments with my golden retriever Ziggy, and time with friends and family are some of my greatest joys. Creativity also plays an important role in my life, whether that’s through writing, design, or other outlets that allow me to bring imagination and heart into the world.

Above all, I am committed to holding space for healing that is compassionate, collaborative, and deeply human.

I believe that trust is the bridge to change and support. Being able to fully trust your therapist and build a strong therapeutic relationship are essential in building an environment where you can feel comfortable and safe. While therapy can guide this process, I have learned that the mechanisms of change come from within, as each person is the expert in their own lives.

My approach to therapy is client-centred, evidence-based, and rooted in compassion. From a CBT perspective, I work alongside clients to clarify their goals and understand how certain thought and behaviour patterns may be standing in the way.

In addition to traditional CBT approaches, I utilize strategies rooted in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), as well as other strengths-based approaches to enhance resilience and support individuals.

My clinical interests include men’s mental health, trauma, anxiety, depression, and attachment-related concerns. I am passionate about helping individuals better understand their patterns, strengthen their resilience, and move toward meaningful change.

Hello, I’m Tabitha. You may recognize me from my work as an intern with our Balance Without Barriers program. I have successfully completed my internship and have taken on a new role as a Mental Health Therapist, while I work towards graduating with my Master’s in Counselling Psychology from City University of Seattle.

I offer a space where you can feel safe, respected, and genuinely heard. Beginning therapy can be a meaningful and sometimes challenging step, and I aim to meet you with steadiness and care as we navigate both the difficult and growth-oriented parts of the process. My approach is collaborative and grounded in the belief that lasting change happens through authentic connection, insight, and aligned action.

My work is primarily informed by attachment theory, which helps guide an understanding of how our relationships shape the way in which we experience ourselves and others. I also draw on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) as a central framework, supporting clients in building psychological flexibility and reconnecting with what matters most. Alongside this, I integrate mindfulness practices, Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), and elements of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), tailoring the process to your unique needs and goals.

Grief work is a central part of my practice. Having completed training in the Grief Recovery Method, I support individuals in navigating the many forms of loss; whether through death, relationship changes, identity shifts, or life transitions. My own experiences with grief were a meaningful catalyst in my decision to pursue this career, and they continue to inform the care, sensitivity, and respect I bring to this work.

Before becoming a therapist, I spent many years working as a legal assistant in high-pressure professional environments. This experience informs my understanding of workplace stress, burnout, and the importance of boundaries and balance. I have also volunteered on crisis lines supporting individuals impacted by sexual violence, which has deepened my commitment to trauma-informed, compassionate care.

I am particularly drawn to working with individuals navigating grief, trauma, relationship challenges, and work-life stress, as well as those seeking greater self-understanding and direction.

It is a privilege to do this work. I aim to support you in making sense of your experiences, strengthening your sense of self, and moving toward a life that feels more grounded, intentional, and meaningful.

I hold a Master of Counselling from City University and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Grant MacEwan University. In my previous life, I was passionate about youth work with marginalized youth populations. I have experience in both outreach relationship building capacities with harder to reach individuals, and in the residential in-patient mental health realm with adolescents. Additionally, I have experience in both non-profit and private practice organizations, and have previously had the joy of learning in an animal and equine assisted practice.

My focus is teens and adults experiencing diverse challenging mental health situations including emotional distress, depression, anxiety, difficulties with life transitions, grief and loss, and trauma. I have special interest in youth navigating the complexities of growing up in government care and am also experienced in supporting caregivers (foster/kinship/adopted parents) in the unique and nuanced circumstances and challenges of those roles. I also am particularly passionate about work with addictions.

My practice is eclectic and tailored to the individual I work with; however, I always focus on a strength based, person centric approach to therapy. From there, I will draw on the different theories to find the best fit for whatever challenges being faced at this time.

I have always had an interest in psychology and mental health. My great aunt was a teacher at Wagner here in Edmonton and she primarily had the teenagers struggling with behavioral challenges. She loved the work, and even after she retired, I would spend time with her and she would have students who were well into their adult years who would stop by and visit her. Her focus on putting the relationship first, believing everyone was doing the best in a situation with what they had in that moment, and her keen understanding that everyone had their own story and we needed to approach with curiosity all primed me for a career working with teenagers myself. She was also the first adult I recall who talked to me as if I had something valuable to say and didn’t just treat me like I was a kid, and that was life changing. I figured if I could be to others even a fraction of what she was, then I was doing well.

In my non-work life, I’m spending time enjoying the chaos of my family and getting lots of attention from my cats Lily, Witchy, and Cas, and my dog Leia. You might find me curled up with a mystery novel and a hot cup of coffee, or settling in with a horror movie and some snacks.

If you’re ready to take the first step towards something new, I invite you to reach out by phone or online booking. I would love to walk this journey with you. Contact me today to schedule a consultation.

Hello! My name is Lara and I am in my final year of my Counselling Psychology program through Yorkville University. I am currently a counselling intern working under the supervision of a Registered Psychologist, and I look forward to working with you. I intend to specialize in trauma therapy after graduation, and I have a strong interest in working with children, adolescents, individuals, couples, families, and eventually group therapy.

I emphasize the importance of client autonomy and will listen to and consider your therapeutic goals, needs, and concerns. I aim to be flexible in my approach, taking into account your thoughts and perspectives, and working collaboratively with you to identify the best course of action to support your success in your counselling journey. I strive to create a space that feels supportive, respectful, and non-judgmental, where you feel comfortable showing up as you are.

In addition to my counselling work, I have a background in education and have been teaching for nearly four years. I have experience teaching primary through high school grades, French as a Second Language (FSL), French Immersion, and Literacy Intervention, where I provided ongoing reading support to students in Grades 1-4. Because of this experience, I enjoy working with both young children and adolescents and feel confident supporting them in a therapeutic setting. I am currently substitute teaching while completing my internship, which allows me the flexibility to meet my required hours and remain present in both roles.

My approach to counselling is trauma-informed, and I recognize that everyone has different life experiences. For those who have experienced trauma, I believe it is essential to provide support in a compassionate, safe, and non-judgmental way. Through my training, I continue to develop skills in being present with clients, building rapport, and establishing trust, which I believe are foundational to meaningful therapeutic work. I also draw from approaches such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) to support clients in understanding their thoughts and emotions, and in developing positive coping strategies. I am always open to questions or feedback and am happy to adjust my approach to best meet your needs.

Outside of my work and studies, I enjoy going to the gym, travelling, spending time with family and friends, and exploring the city, especially in the summertime!

Hi! I’m Jessica and I’m so glad you’ve made it here.

Life can feel especially heavy when you’re navigating the challenges of parenting or coping with loss and life transitions. You may be juggling endless responsibilities while trying to show up for others, yet quietly carrying emotions that feel too big, or too complicated, to share. Many of the people I work with are people who feel stretched too thin, stuck in self-doubt, or are unsure how to find balance between caring for others and caring for themselves. Others come to therapy after loss – grieving a loved one, a relationship, a dream, or a version of themselves.

My approach to therapy keeps it really accessible. I aim to meet you where you are – with empathy, collaboration, and respect for your pace and goals. As a parent myself, I understand how life’s demands can add up and how easy it is to lose touch with your own needs. Counselling offers a space to pause, reflect, and begin again with intention.

My approach is trauma-informed and collaborative. I draw from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Narrative Therapy, somatic practices, and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). I help you tune into your inner thoughts and feelings with curiosity.

Talking about mental health can be scary, but you’ve already made the first step! I’d be honoured to walk alongside you. My hope is that our work together helps you feel more connected, supported, and empowered to live in alignment with your values.

I don’t believe in “ideal clients” — that idea feels backwards to me. If you’re willing to share a piece of your story, you’re welcome here. I know how tiring it can be to scroll through therapist bios, trying to figure out who might actually understand. I won’t claim to have all the answers — I don’t. What I offer is a space where you don’t have to hold it all together. Bring the overwhelm, the numbness, the grief, the “too much” — we’ll work through it side by side. You don’t have to pretend here, and that’s where the real work can start.

I’ve spent over seven years supporting people in different ways — from schools and universities, to women’s programs at Hope Mission, to wellness groups and even farms where animal therapy showed me the power of connection. My background includes a diploma in Social Work, a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology, and a Master of Counselling from City University of Seattle. I’m EMDR trained, DBT-informed, and I draw on holistic approaches that mix practical tools with honest reflection (and sometimes a bit of tough love).

I specialize in trauma, grief and loss, ADHD, perinatal mental health, first responder support, and those big “why” questions that keep us up at night. I’ve spent much of my career alongside youth and families, helping kids and teens work through anxiety, conflict, and self-esteem, while supporting their parents in the process. It’s work I care deeply about, and I’m continuing to grow my toolbox — with play therapy on my list of next trainings.

Life can be messy, heavy, and confusing, but that doesn’t mean you’re broken. The strength you need has always been there — sometimes it just takes the right support to see it again. Therapy with me isn’t about fixing you; it’s about having someone alongside you while you sort through what feels overwhelming and begin to steady yourself. If you’re ready to show up — even unsure, even messy — that’s already enough to begin.

Details on the populations you’ll be working with (especially minimum age)

I primarily work with adults (18+), but I also welcome youth beginning around age 8, depending on the fit and circumstances. The populations I support include individuals navigating grief and loss, perinatal challenges, ADHD, bipolar and other neurodivergent experiences, first responder stress, trauma, separation or relationship conflict, and youth-related concerns. I also have a growing interest in sex therapy — particularly creating a safe space to explore intimacy, sexuality, and other topics that can feel taboo or difficult to talk about openly.

Hello, I’m Asli Verel – an intern mental health therapist.

I am currently in the final year of the Master of Counselling program at City University of Seattle. I also hold a dual bachelor’s degree in Liberal Arts and Teaching English as a Second Language from SUNY New Paltz and Middle East Technical University. I offer therapy in Turkish and English.

My therapeutic approach is integrative, drawing on several evidence-based modalities including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Schema Therapy, Existential Therapy, the Grief Recovery Method, and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). As an immigrant woman who moved to Canada over 12 years ago, I bring a lived understanding of migratory grief, parenthood challenges, and the emotional complexity of living between cultures. Coming from a collectivist background, I also recognize the deep sense of loneliness and disconnection that can emerge when adjusting to a more individualistic society. These experiences enable me to connect with diverse individuals as they navigate identity, transition, loss, and belonging in culturally sensitive ways.

Outside of my clinical work, I enjoy art, reading, traveling, listening to music, practicing yoga, and creating simple self-care routines. Also value time spent with family and friends, and find joy in nature and everyday exploration.

If you’re seeking support on your journey or need a space to be heard, I would be honored to walk alongside you. Please feel free to reach out to schedule a consultation or book a session. My goal is to offer a safe, nonjudgmental space where we can work together to clarify your goals and move toward healing and growth.
